Camí de Matagalls. SL-C82
One of the classic ascents of Montseny, described by Artur Osona in 1876, now up the forested north face.
A continuously climbing path that passes most of the forested and spectacular parts of Matagalls before ending up in the grasslands and thickets at the summit. The best views over Montseny can be enjoyed from the top.
Matagalls is considered as one of the most emblematic mountains in Catalonia, and one of its great literary references.
Together with Montserrat and Canigó, it completes the triangle of the three Verdaguer summits, and it is a Claretian point par excellence.
The name Matagalls was first mentioned in the year 1500. Before that, and well into the 17th century, the mountain was known as Autora. The reason for changing its name is unknown.
Mossèn Pladevall considers several versions of the origin of its name, including possible Celtic roots. They all make reference to "greatness", "high hill", "stones or thickets with spikes".
Nowadays, people from Viladrau refer to the summit by the simple name of "La Cruz" (The Cross).
